Healthy Smiles for Kids
Despite significant improvements in dental health over the past two decades, many Australian children still suffer from unacceptably high levels of dental decay. In the younger age group (4-6 years), 10% of children have eight or more teeth are affected by dental decay. Parents play an important role in helping their children to establish good oral health practices early in life. They include: · Cleaning teeth in the morning and at night with a fluoride toothpaste and a small soft toothbrush. It is recommended that children under the age of six years use a low fluoride concentrated toothpaste. · Eating a wide variety of nutritious foods. · Drinking milk and fluoridated water rather than sports drinks, cordials and other beverages that can be high in sugar and quite acidic. · Visiting a dental professional on a regular basis from the age of two years. · Wearing proper safety equipment (e.g. mouthguard and helmet) when playing sports and during training.
